While rivals Young Africans SC struggled to earn three points in their opening NBC Premier League fixture there were no problems for Simba in their 2022-23 league debut as the Reds of Msimbazi dispatched Geita Gold 3-0 on Wednesday. New signings Augustine Okrah and Moses Phiri scored on their league debuts while familiar face Clatous Chama converted from the penalty spot late on for a comfortable three points. Simba will stay at home for their next match on Saturday against Kagera Sugar.
It was not quite a comprehensive and dominant victory for the Reds but new signing Okrah, a star in the Ghana Premier League last season for runners-up Bechem United, provided the boost the hosts needed in the 37th minute after Chama was fouled outside the penalty area. Okrah’s free kick attempt on goal was not convincing but was spilled by Geita Gold goalkeeper Sebusebu Samson and Okrah was off to celebrate with the supporters.
Chama was involved in the second goal as well just after the hour mark after Malawi national team playmaker Peter Banda produced a winding dribbling run before feeding Chama on the left wing. The Zambian attacker connected with countryman Phiri with a perfect cross to leave the former Zanaco striker with an easy tap in to double Simba’s lead. Geita Gold’s misery was completed in the 82nd minute when Chama sent a spot kick beyond Sebusebu after Okrah was pushed down in the penalty area.
