Liverpool block Mohamed Salah Egypt call-up

Nothing has represented the constant issue of club versus country better than the tug-of-war between English Premier League club Liverpool FC and the Egyptian national team for the services of Mohamed Salah this summer, and Monday’s news of Liverpool blocking Salah’s selection for Egypt’s upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifying games shifted the battle to another level. After previously blocking Salah’s selection for the Tokyo Olympics squad, Liverpool cited Egypt’s place on the United Kingdom’s “Red list” as the reason, meaning Salah would have to quarantine for ten days upon returning to the UK.

90min has the latest on Salah’s selection, mentioning that a compromise may be reached for Salah to feature in Egypt’s away match against Gabon while missing the Pharaohs’ home fixture against Angola. Egypt start their campaign off against Angola at home on September 2 before facing Gabon three days later.
