Mamelodi Sundowns wrap up PSL title with three games to spare following win over SuperSport United

It is now four leagues titles on the run for Mamelodi Sundowns, who have truly established themselves as South Africa’s top side following the clinching of the DStv Premiership with games to spare on Wednesday. The Brazilians defeated SuperSport United 3-1 and now have an unassailable ten point lead at the top of the table with three matches still to play.

SuperSport United’s performance certainly helped Sundowns along to obtain the win they desired. In the 7th minute Giuly Manziba went in for a challenge and put his studs into Sphelele Mkhulise’s midsection, giving the referee no choice but to red card the Congolese player and put SuperSport down to ten players. In the 32nd minute Audrey Modiba made an excellent run down the left wing to the end line before crossing low, his service flicked on by Kermit Erasmus into the path of an onrushing Lebogang Maboe to smash home the opening goal.

Maboe’s goal started an onslaught in the last 15 minutes of the first half that put Sundowns far beyond the reach of the visitors. Modiba was involved again on the second goal in the 40th minute, providing an inswinging service from the right wing that bounced through a crowd of players and into the goal past a helpless Ronwen Williams in the SuperSport goal. Williams was expecting a touch from one of the crowd of players and saw the ball bounce through too late.

Modiba created the third goal as well to put the final nail in SuperSport’s coffin just before halftime. Making another brilliant run, this time down the right flank, Modiba cut the ball back for Themba Zwane to smash the ball into the roof of net and it was 3-0. Being a player down, SuperSport had no shot of getting back into the match and did well just to get one goal back late on. The day was all about Sundowns in the end with their streak of excellence in South African football continuing in full swing.
