Following the results over the weekend, the Ghana Premier League finally has a bit of space between its apparent title contenders and the rest of the pack. Current top side Medeama along with Asante Kotoko and Great Olympics secured wins to create a three-point gap between the three sides and Dreams FC in fourth place. However, teams like Hearts of Oak and Karela still lurk not too far away in the distance despite underwhelming results.
Kotoko’s result was the most impressive of the three contenders with their 0-1 road victory over Legon Cities on Saturday. Brazilian creative midfielder Fabio Gama scored his third goal of the season to make the difference for the Porcupine Warriors. In the 12th minute Gama sent provided an inswinging free-kick with his left foot that bounced through the crowd and past a helpless Winfred Honu in the Legon Cities goal.
Ahmed Toure started the scoring in the 49th minute for current leaders Medeama in their 3-0 win against Ebusua Dwarfs. Within 18 minutes of Toure’s opener the hosts had found the other two goals from Ibrahim Yaro and Prince Agyemang, completing a decisive second-half performance for the three points.
Hearts of Oak met difficult opposition on the road Sunday and fell 0-2 to Dreams FC on the road. It was an ominous start for the Phobians when a 9th minute giveaway nearly led to Dreams’ opener, but the second-half brought Dreams the goals they desired. Following a 50th minute dismissal for Hearts defender Nuru Sulley due to a second yellow card, Ali Huzaf struck for Dreams by following up a saved effort in the 54th minute for his first goal of the season. 19-year-old Sylvester Simba snuck a shot underneath the Hearts goalkeeper from a tight angle in the dying seconds to clinch victory for Dreams.
