MTN 8: Castillo’s late goal nudges Kaizer Chiefs past Cape Town City

Kaizer Chiefs emerged victorious following a thrilling quarterfinal clash against Cape Town City in Sunday’s opening quarterfinal match from the MTN 8, claiming a 2-1 victory to advance to the semifinals. Venezuelan playmaker Edson Castillo’s volley somehow found its way into the goal in second half stoppage time to win it for Chiefs who edged Cape Town City in an even match with plenty of opportunities for both sides.

It appeared to be a familiar sight for Chiefs supporters who were left frustrated yet again after their team fell behind in the first half. Following a corner kick in the 23rd minute, Cape Town City winger Taahir Goedeman floated in a cross from the right flank to find the head of Mark van Heerden whose attempt went off the post and just crept over the line before Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen could swat the ball clear.

The pace of the Chiefs attack created danger all match however, and a quick counter resulted in a 36th minute equalizer after Ashley du Preez sprinted onto Mduduzi Mdantsane’s pass and fired low past Citizens keeper Darren Keet. Chiefs proceeded to maintain their threat on the break throughout the second half but lackluster finishing and final product along with the efforts of Keet kept the match even.

After missing a couple of opportunities, Chiefs substitute Christian Saile finally got it right in the fourth minute of second half stoppage time when the Congolese provided a high cross from the right wing to find Castillo whose far post volley just snuck under Keet. Cape Town City came quite close to equalizing in the final moments but after substitute Joaquim Paciência curled his shot off the crossbar, desperate Chiefs defending did just enough to clear the danger.
