MTN 8: De Jong’s extra-time header the difference as Stellenbosch knocks out SuperSport

A header from Andre de Jong in the first half of extra time gave Stellenbosch FC a 1-0 victory over SuperSport United on Sunday in South Africa’s MTN 8. The New Zealander got on the end of a corner kick service from Fawaaz Basadien to give the Stellies their first ever victory in the competition and a spot in the semifinals alongside South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

After failing in their first MTN 8 appearance last season at home against Kaizer Chiefs last season, a road test beckoned for Stellenbosch in Pretoria against last season’s DStv Premiership third placed side. SuperSport looked a bit more dangerous out of the two teams but there was little composure in the final third. The closest either team came to scoring arrived late in the first half when former Chiefs forward Kgaogelo Sekgota set up Devon Titus for a shot that went right at SuperSport goalkeeper Washington Arubi.

However a well executed corner kick from Stellenbosch left back Basadien found the near post run of de Jong who snapped a header into the roof of the net past Arubi to give the visitors the lead in the 99th minute. SuperSport pushed for an equalizer but could not find a way past the Stellenbosch defense.
