Angry Nigerian supporters stormed the pitch after their team drew Ghana 1-1 in Abuja on Tuesday, resulting in the Super Eagles’ elimination from qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. The rioters overwhelmed security personnel and destroyed items on the pitch including the benches as they threw objects at the visiting team and Ghanaian supporters. Tear gas was eventually needed and in the midst of the rioting, Zambian doctor and CAF official Joseph Kabungo collapsed and died due to apparent breathing problems.
The incident is guaranteed to draw sanctions towards the Nigeria Football Federation from CAF and FIFA following an investigation. ESPN has video of the rioting in the first link below and Punch Newspapers has more on the death of Dr. Kabungo in the second link.
