Kenya Commercial Bank have seized on Tusker FC’s slump in form to emerge as the current top team in Kenya’s FKF Premier League and it looks like they are getting comfortable. KCB did enough to secure a 1-0 victory over last placed Mathare United on Saturday thanks to a Derrick Otanga penalty kick conversion in the 57th minute, Otanga’s eighth goal of the season. With the loss, Mathare look all but certain to be relegated this season as they now sit seven points away from safety.
Other than a couple of speculative looks for Mathare, the match was dominated by Sidwedwe with numerous looks on the visitors’ goal. There seemed to be the threat of KCB not being able to convert one of their many opportunities but the decisive moment came early in the second half. Baraka Badi was first to a ball on the edge of the Mathare penalty area and flicked the ball over a sliding defender, who caught him and forced the hand of the referee, who pointed to the penalty spot. Otanga calmly sent the keeper the other way with a low spot kick and KCB got their three points.
