After speculation and delay, Portuguese coach José Peseiro was unveiled as the new manager of the Nigeria national team on Monday. Peseiro was previously set to take over in February following the Super Eagles elimination from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations but contractual disagreements saw him decline the opportunity. The 62-year-old will be assisted by first assistant coach and former Nigeria star Finidi George as well as Salisu Yusuf.
Peseiro has managed at numerous top division clubs in Europe with top Portuguese sides FC Porto and Sporting CP as well as with Egyptian club Al Ahly. His most recent stint was with the Venezuela national team where he departed due to unpaid wages. Nigeria will play two friendly matches in the United States against Mexico and Ecuador before opening up their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign at home against Sierra Leone followed by a road match against Mauritius.
