The Gabonese Football Federation (FEGAFOOT) announced it had received a letter from longtime standout striker and FC Barcelona player Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang confirming his retirement from international football two weeks before Les Panthères start up their qualifying campaign for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. The 32-year-old thanked the Gabonese people as well as his teammates, coaches and father in parts of the letter posted by FEGAFOOT. Aubameyang followed in the footsteps of father Pierre in representing the Panthers from 2009 to 2022 and scored 30 goals in 72 appearances, most notably leading the team to a quarterfinal finish in the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
