The Super Eagles lineup and performance had plenty of pleasing elements for Nigerian fans, but Cameroon’s only shot on target in the whole match, a long-range strike from Fulham midfielder André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, was enough to help the Indomitable Lions to a 1-0 victory in Austria on Friday. A weakened Cameroon team due to injuries did brilliantly to hold off an eager Nigerian attack that gave extended spells for in form strikers Paul Onuachu and Kelechi Iheanacho, with AS Vita Club goalkeeper Simon Omossola making an excellent impression by making five saves.
Anguissa’s goal came in the 37th minute when he collected a long ball that was unconvincingly cleared by the Nigeria defense and delivered a hard, low strike that beat keeper Maduka Okoye at his near post. It set the stage for the Indomitable Lions to put up a defensive front for the remainder of the match that was very successful in keeping the Super Eagles from creating clear looks at Omossola’s goal. Moses Simon and Joe Aribo showed the most promise to create openings but in the end it was disappointing result for Nigeria as Super Eagles fans continue to be underwhelmed by the quality shown on the pitch.
