
Former Algeria national team star and 1990 Africa Cup of Nations top scorer Djamel Menad passed away on Saturday after a short illness. Menad, 64, played his club football in his native country, France and Portugal.
Widely regarded as one of the best Algerian players in the 1980’s, Menad appeared for Les Fennecs 81 times. He was crucial in the 1990 AFCON which was won by Algeria as hosts of the competition. His four goals earned him the top goal king accolade.
Menad played for JS Kabylie, Nimes and Famalicao among others in a career that spanned twenty years. He represented Algeria for fifteen years as he appeared in the 1986 FIFA World Cup and the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

As a coach he led the likes of MC Alger, CR Belouizdad, USM Alger and had a brief stint in 2017 as assistant coach of the Algerian national side. Algerian president Abdelmadjid Tebboune led tributes to the legend stating that the loss of Menad is big blow to Algerian football.
Algeria Football Federation president Walid Sadi also sent his condolences and was present during Menad’s funeral on Saturday.
