
South Africa and their Egyptian counterparts played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their playoff duel from 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying on Sunday.
The match, hosted by Bafana Bafana in Bloemfontein, featured two stunning goals and left the tie wide open ahead of the return leg. Egypt took the lead in the 66th minute when winger Mohamed Antar fired a long-range shot into the net, giving the Pharaohs an advantage as well as a valuable away goal.
However, South Africa responded in the 80th minute with an impressive strike from Sekhukhune United midfielder Webber, leveling the score at 1-1.
The decisive second leg will take place on Sunday, March 9, at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia, Egypt. The aggregate winner of this encounter will advance to face the victor of the Malawi vs. Comoros tie in the final stage of qualification, which saw Malawi win 2-0 in the first leg played earlier on Sunday.
The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from August 2 to August 30.
