After neither team could score a goal over two legs, The Gambia emerged victorious over Gabon in a penalty kick shootout to conclude their 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifying playoff duel on Saturday.

Gabon appeared to have the advantage after holding Gambia to a 0-0 first leg draw in Senegal. However, the Panthers failed to find a breakthrough at home in Franceville with a penalty shootout the only way to separate the teams.

A clutch performance by the Scorpions saw the visitors convert all five of their spot kicks with Gabon failing to convert one of their attempts. After Gabon faltered on their fourth attempt, Hawks Football Club player Abdourahman Jobe stepped up to finish the winning penalty.

The Gambia qualify for the final round of the qualifying playoff where the Scorpions will take on Algeria for a place in the finals. Malawi, who confirmed their place in the final round earlier with a 4-0 aggregate victory over Comoros on Saturday, will face the winner between Egypt and South Africa who meet for the second leg on Sunday after a 1-1 draw in the first leg played in South Africa.
