Malawi beat Comoros 2-0 in an African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier in Lilongwe on Saturday, handing newly-appointed coach Kalisto Pasuwa a winning start to the Flames job ahead of the return leg in the qualifying playoff.
Striker Binwell Katinji, a late addition to the hosts' squad, put the Flames ahead with a 44th-minute header before his Silver Strikers team-mate Zebron Kalima came off the bench to cushion the lead with a fine finish on the stroke of full time.
Katinji headed into the net from defender MacDonald Lameck’s delivery for the Flames to go to break with the slender lead. Later on it was Kalima's turn to add Malawi's second goal after coming on for striker Ephraim Kondowe with 30 minutes remaining on the clock.
The visitors had chances to fashion something from the game but Fadhula Botomonango placed his effort wide after getting past Malawi's defence.
The Flames face Comoros again at the same Bingu National Stadium in the reverse fixture on March 8 following the request of the islanders who do not have a certified venue. The aggregate winner from the two legs will face the winner between South Africa and Egypt in May for a place at the CHAN finals.
