Uganda Cranes secured qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s football history.
FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo expressed his gratitude and outlined the key factors behind this achievement, emphasizing the collective effort and hard work of all stakeholders involved. Speaking after the confirmation of Uganda’s qualification, Magogo highlighted the resilience of a transitioning team and the coordination of efforts from various contributors.
“First of all, I am grateful to God. Whatever we pray for, He has provided and the qualification has come after a lot of hard work by everybody in their different roles. The players have done their best, we motivated them, we’ve pushed them. This is a new team coming out of a transition and qualification in such style is rare, but it reflects the effort put in by the players, the technical team and the federation,” said Magogo.
The FUFA President underscored the role of logistics, preparation and support from the Ugandan government, singling out key figures such as President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni for their unwavering belief and contributions.
“I can’t fail to thank the government of Uganda, H.E the President for always believing and supporting the federation. Whatever we have asked for, he has provided. Maama Janet Museveni has always prayed for and guided us. I also extend gratitude to the Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Speaker Anita Among, Deputy Speaker and all members who have been with us. Our gallant fans, both home and abroad, as well as our sponsors – MTN, Nile Special, Bidco, Nivana and others have played a critical role.”
A Historic Achievement. Under Eng. Magogo’s leadership, this is Uganda’s third AFCON qualification following the 2017 tournament in Gabon and the 2019 edition in Egypt. The FUFA boss acknowledged the Cranes’ ability to qualify in style, securing their spot on Match Day five due to strong performances in earlier matches.
“We qualified before kicking the final game, which shows the strength of our previous input. Collecting 10 points in the first four games is no small feat. This is a new group of players and instilling a winning culture in them will take this team miles,” Magogo added.
The Uganda Cranes finished second in Group K with 13 points, just one point behind group leaders South Africa. Uganda finished their campaign with a 1-0 victory in Brazaville against Congo while South Africa beat South Sudan 3-0 in Johannesburg.
Both Uganda and South Africa had already confirmed their qualification before the final match day, thanks to consistent performances throughout the campaign. As the team heads to Morocco, FUFA President Magogo reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a winning mentality in the Cranes.
“We want to win every game. We want winning to become a culture we believe in, and with this new group of players, I see Uganda achieving even greater heights,” he concluded.
Uganda’s qualification for the 2025 AFCON reflects the strides made under Eng. Moses Magogo’s leadership and the collective spirit of all stakeholders.
With a young and promising team developing a winning culture, the nation looks forward to a strong showing at Africa’s biggest football stage.
