Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw believes they will face a strong challenge to defend their Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in Morocco.

The Lions of Teranga were pooled in Group D alongside the Democratic Republic of Congo, Benin, and Botswana. Speaking after the draw, Thiaw acknowledged the challenges ahead but exuded confidence in their ability to compete for their second continental title.

“It will not be easy at all. These are all teams that have proven themselves,” said Thiaw as quoted by CAFOnline.com. “There are no more small teams in Africa, but we are Senegal, and we will do everything to be there.”

Thiaw added: “We know the strengths of DR Congo and Benin, but we must not underestimate Botswana. Our aim is clear—to win every game and progress as far as possible.”

On whether Senegal are among the favourites heading to the 2025 tournament in the North African nation, Thiaw said: “When you are ranked second in Africa and 17th in the world, you must always aim for the Grail in every competition. Our goal is to clinch our second AFCON title, and we will fight to make it happen.”

He concluded: “We have shown what we are capable of, and we will leave no stone unturned in our pursuit of victory.”

Senegal won their first AFCON title in 2021 when they defeated Egypt in the final.
