Uganda head coach Paul Put has called on fans to turn out in large numbers and cheer the Cranes when they take on South Africa in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier at the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Uganda on Friday.
The Cranes and Bafana Bafana both sealed their tickets to the AFCON in Morocco without kicking a ball on Thursday after South Sudan defeated Congo 3-2 in another Group K fixture at Juba National Stadium.
The result meant Uganda sealed qualification to the AFCON on 10 points alongside South Africa, who they play in their matchday five fixture. Uganda Cranes closely followed the game between South Sudan and Congo in camp and went into celebrations immediately after the full-time whistle.
Speaking ahead of their clash against Bafana, Put said: “One message, please to the supporters, I always say if all the supporters are behind the team, everybody is behind the team, we will create a great team and get good results.
“These were my words in Burkina Faso and I repeat them in Uganda, I ask the fans to come out and rally behind the team from the first minute to the last minute, we need you all and we will make you happy.”
Uganda’s journey to this crucial match was set in motion with a dramatic 2-2 draw in Johannesburg. Goals from Denis Omedi and Rogers Mato proved Uganda’s resilience. Now, on their home turf, the Cranes are self-confident to go beyond resilience—they are preparing to dominate, with sights set firmly on victory.
Uganda have now qualified to the AFCON eight times. These include; 1962, 1968, 1972, 1974, 1978, 2017, 2019 and 2025.
