Rwanda head coach Adel Amrouche has admitted to being ashamed with national team Amavubi’s display in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying 2-0 defeat against Nigeria at Amahoro Stadium on Thursday.
In his first match since taking charge of Amavubi, Amrouche watched helplessly as the Super Eagles picked their first victory of the campaign also under new Malian coach Eric Chelle.
An attack-minded approach by the Super Eagles saw Victor Osimhen shining bright for the former African champions with a brace in the 11th and 45th minute leaving the East African nation with no answers.
“There are somethings we need to correct in this team. No problem, we lost and will regroup and go again in our next game,” Amrouche told the media. “I am very ashamed today. We can’t give such performance like this today in front of all these fans and the president.”
The win enabled Nigeria to move fourth in Group C with six points from five matches. They have managed one win, three draws and suffered one defeat.
Meanwhile, despite the defeat, Rwanda remained second with seven points amassed from two wins, one draw and two defeats. While Nigeria will host Zimbabwe in their matchday six at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday, Rwanda will remain at home to face Lesotho on the same day.
Likuena will head into the fixture against Amavubi having lost 2-0 against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in matchday five.
