Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has evaluated the performance of Percy Tau, who was making a comeback to South Africa team for their 2-0 win against Lesotho in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture at a sold-out Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Friday.

The 30-year-old was handed a start in the game against Likuena, a first since August, 2024, when he turned out for South Africa. A masterclass second half performance saw Relebohile Mofokeng open the scoring in the 60th minute following some fine work from Elias Mokwana before Jayden Adams increased the lead three minutes later.

Speaking on the performance of Tau, who recently signed for Qatar SC from Egyptian giants Al Ahly, Broos said as quoted by FARPost: “I think, and I’ve said it before, that we couldn’t be happy with Percy’s performance in the previous games.

“That was not the level of Percy, and today [Friday], you can tell that he played a fantastic game but worked a lot, and that is because he’s used to playing games. When you don’t play games, you don’t have the rhythm.

“So I think the more he plays games, we’ll start seeing the best of Percy again because he’s playing now in Qatar. He can always do more [for Bafana], and if I’m honest, I think we can expect more, but I’m very happy with his performance because he worked a lot for the team.”

South Africa will next face Benin in their next Group C fixture at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast on Sunday. Bafana are currently placed top with 10 points, two fewer than second-placed Benin, while Rwanda are third on seven.
