South Africa forward Percy Tau has credited coach Hugo Broos for changing the mentality of Bafana Bafana in regards to their qualification campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to the former Al Ahly player, the Belgian has done a lot to lift the morale of the players, the team has been able to get the job done easily, thus increasing their chances of qualifying, unlike previous campaigns when they could struggle in the qualifiers.
"Yeah no, I think the generations are different, the teams are different, yes the coach also plays a big part in that in how he manages the squad. Of course, different coaches manage differently but I know we are able to get the job done with our coach Hugo and then he's there for us the way he supports us,” said Tau as quoted by SABC Sport.
“We've done it in the past, the way we've tried to do it but then we'll always have disappointing moments in the last games. So, that's the difference. Previous qualifiers that I've been with the national team will always miss it in the last games either away or home. They'll always be something with the last games.
“So, with coach Hugo, no, we are able to get the job done. So, that's the biggest difference.”
Tau finally made a return to the Bafana squad for their qualifier against Lesotho which they won 2-0, and speaking on the match he said: “Look, I'm happy to be back and it was a difficult game yesterday. We knew they were going to make it as difficult as possible but we already had goals early.
“In the second half I think they changed the whole game because at first, they were just closing everywhere. We know Lesotho, whenever they play against us they make it difficult but then the result was important.”
Bafana, who are topping Group C with 10 points from five matches, will face Benin in their matchday six fixture at Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast on Tuesday.
