Mali missed out on a chance to close the gap on Group I leaders Ghana in Casablanca after drawing 0-0 against Central African Republic on Monday in 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying. CAR came to the tie following a 4-1 heavy drubbing at the hands of Madagascar on matchday five.

The Eagles dominated the proceedings from the onset but they lacked attacking proficiency. The visitors were very close to breaking the deadlock through Dorgeles Nene who shockingly fired off target from close range. In the second interval, Mali tested CAR on several occasions.

In the 51st minute, Sikou Niakaté headed wide before right back Cheick Oumar Konaté rattled the post from the right wing. Mali had multiple penalty claims waived off by match referee Godfrey Nkhakananga as CAR defended bravely to earn a point.

The draw left Mali level on points with Comoros in third place in Group I, one point behind Madagascar. CAR improved their performance from last week, a lopsided 1-4 defeat to Madagascar, to gain a point. They remain fifth with five points.
