Ghana brightened their chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with yet another resounding victory over Madagascar in the sixth fixture of the campaign on Monday, March 24.

The four time African champions were coming from a massive 5-0 victory against Chad in game day five at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, March 21 and the second win helped them chalk 15 points.

The Black Stars now sit top of Group I after recording the two straight wins, five points better than Madagascar moving into the next qualifiers in September.

Head coach, Otto Addo expressed joy after doubling their chance of booking a ticket to the next global football showpiece in Mexico, Canada and the USA next year.

“A big congratulations to the team, the work ethics today was exceptional. I think we started well which led to some free kicks and one of the free kicks we used well to score and then from there I will say Madagascar played really well, put pressure on us without creating any big chances but you could see the movement that they played well.

“But we were defensively very solid, I was happy for that and the second half we came up really well, we controlled the game, we had a lot of free kicks again which was really also well done by our captain, Jordan [Ayew] with three assists.

“It’s really amazing, Thomas [Partey] with two goals and it was really decisive with the free kicks and also position in the box, we were very very happy for that.”

Notwithstanding the two important victories, the German trained tactician admits that there is still more work to be done.

“Like I said, it is not done yet, there is still more work to do, things can turn very very fast and as a national coach, you always have to work for some months, get the team to play together again but like I said, I am very happy for the results.”

The two victories come in to placate the disappointment from Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco – a first absence from the continental football showpiece in over two decades.
