In Group D from 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying in the African region, Angola secured a late 1-1 draw against Libya in the fifth round while Cape Verde moved to the top of the group after a narrow victory over Mauritius.
The later match between Libya and Angola, held at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Libya, saw a packed crowd witnessing the battle. This was Libya’s first match since the appointment of Senegalese Aliou Cissé, who was more of an observer as assistant Abou Baker ElHark oversaw the team due to the short time frame since Cissé's appointment.
Libya took the lead in the 74th minute through substitute Muaid Ellafi. The forward, who was introduced at halftime, made a strong impact by heading in a precise cross from fellow substitute Mohammad Soulah into the net.
The home side seemed destined for victory but Angola found an equalizer in the dying moments (93rd minute). Fredy sent in a free kick on goal from the wing and Libya goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi could only palm the ball into the side of his net. Despite the suspension of forward Mabululu who plays in Libyan Premier League, Angola managed to get an important point in Libya.
Benefiting most from the draw was Cape Verde who snatched top spot with a 1-0 victory at home over Mauritius. In very windy conditions in the Cape Verdean capital of Praia, Mauritius defended admirably and frustrated the Blue Sharks for long stretches of the match.
However, a cross from Yannick Semedo in the 84th minute turned into a perfect shot as the ball curled out of reach of Mauritius keeper Dorian Chiotti and into the goal off the post to the elation of home supporters.
Cape Verde lead Cameroon by one point while Libya and Angola follow closely behind in Group D, which only became tighter after Thursday's matches.
