Guinea and Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy openly admitted that his side was second-best in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Uganda on Tuesday night.
Guinea fell to a 1-0 defeat at Namboole Stadium with Allan Okello’s first-half free-kick proving to be the difference for the Cranes.
The Syli National struggled to impose themselves against a well-organized Uganda side, failing to create clear scoring chances. During a mixed zone post-match interview, Guirassy did not shy away from acknowledging his team's shortcomings.
“First of all, I think we deserved to lose. We weren’t good enough. Of course, Uganda is a good team and I think they deserved to win, so congratulations to them.”
The Borussia Dortmund forward, who has been in stellar form at club level with fourteen Bundesliga goals and ten in the UEFA Champions League this season, was neutralized by Uganda’s resolute defense marshaled by the night’s skipper Elio Capradossi and Bevis Mugabi.
Guirassy pointed to Guinea’s lackluster display as a key factor in their defeat.
“We didn’t create many chances and of course Uganda defended very well, but I think we didn’t play how we were supposed to play.”
The loss compounds Guinea’s struggles in the qualifiers, coming on the back of a disappointing 0-0 draw against Somalia.
With just seven points from six matches, their hopes of making it to the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken a significant hit as they drop to fourth in Group G.
Group G Table (6 matches played)

The group winner qualifies for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Four of the nine group runners-up qualify for a playoff to determine Africa's representative at the intercontinental qualifying playoff.
