Former Ghana coach, Charles Akonnor has said that, ex-stars, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan’s presence in the national team camp impacted the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

Stephen Appiah, a former captain was appointed Vice-Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, a role that will help him oversee the players welfare.

Asamoah Gyan on the hand has no portfolio at the national team since hanging his boots but joined the Black Stars training for tete-a-tete ahead of the games against Chad and Madagascar.

Gyan travelled with the team to Morocco in March day six where the four time African champions defeated Madagascar 3-0 after whitewashing Chad 5-0 in Accra. Akonnor, who once captained the Black Stars, emphasized the significant impact of the two former captains on the team’s performance.

“The inclusion of former players, Stephen Appiah and Asamoah Gyan, has positively impacted the team, boosting confidence with their experience and leadership,” he told Asempa FM.

Ghana sit top of Group I with 15 points, three better than Comoros after six matches into the qualifying campaign. The World Cup qualifiers will return in September.

The Black Stars will regroup in June for a four-nation tournament in England before facing Chad and Mali in the Matchday 7 and 8 qualifiers in September.
