Osimhen and Lookman: Nigeria Super Eagles.

Nigeria captain William Troost-Ekong has described Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman as among the world’s best players after their showing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against hosts Rwanda on Friday.

The Super Eagles skipper said this in a post-match interview for their away 2-0 win in Rwanda in the Group C game to remain in fourth place, six points behind leaders South Africa.

The Al-Kholood centre-back said while he did not want to single out players for the collective performance against Rwanda, it was a fact that Lookman and Osimhen are stars.

“Victor is a fantastic player. I think he is among the world’s best together with Lookman. They are Africa’s best players. I don’t want to single out players. There is a real team spirit and that was what we had before and it is part of the generation of Super Eagles that you are seeing now,” the defender added.

The Super Eagles on-field leader added that the players were yet to fully grasp the coaching philosophy of new boss Eric Chelle who was making his debut.

“Against Rwanda, it wasn’t easy. We have faced them several times now and it is a team we respect. We tried to understand what he wanted us to do as we only had two or three training sessions and a lot of video sessions. Today you saw glimpses of what you should be expecting of coach Echelle,” the defender added.

Speaking at the same post-match conference, Chelle said he was not surprised by the outcome as he did his homework aware he was up against a top tactician for Rwanda, Adel Amrouche.

“It was a difficult game because Rwanda has a great coach. I know the coach. He is great a coach and they made it a great game too. I am so happy and proud of my players. We had two training sessions but lots of video sessions and lots of information for my players. We had a game plan and the players made this victory. For me, the win is normal,” Chelle added.

Osimhen, the Galatasaray FC centre-forward, scored a double in the 2-0 win over Rwanda for the Super Eagles to stay in fourth place, four points behind leaders South Africa. Nigeria host Zimbabwe on March 24, 2025.
