Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle has revealed the message he delivered to Super Eagles players ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday.
The Malian tactician kicked off his reign as the Super Eagles coach with a 2-0 win against Rwanda, a victory that revived their slim hopes of qualifying for the global tournament to be co-hosted by Mexico, Canada and the USA.
Ahead of their matchday six fixture and despite admitting that the Warriors will pose a huge threat to his side, Chelle stressed the importance of the Super Eagles winning every game they are drawn to participate in including the World Cup qualifiers.
“I talked to my players and I told them I want to win every game so I’m focused on the next game which is against Zimbabwe and after the game against Zimbabwe we can think about the next game,” Chelle said as quoted by CompleteSports. “But now I just want to talk about the Zimbabwe game which is the most important for my team.
“It’s just one game and we’ve done the job and I was happy for my players, happy for the country but this is just one game. After the game I said we need to be focus on the second game which is the most important now. I was proud of my players for what they did in Rwanda it was very difficult but they did the job.”
On facing Zimbabwe, he said: “So yesterday (Sunday) we had a good training session so we need to go again to the pitch to prepare for the game against Zimbabwe. It will not be easy because Zimbabwe are a good team with good players and a good coach who has a good project so we need to be focused on our team and do everything to win.”
The win against Amavubi took Nigeria points to six and remained fourth in Group C while, Zimbabwe, who drew 2-2 against Benin, are sixth with three points. South Africa are sitting top with 10 points and will face second-placed Benin, who have garnered eight points.
