Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle believes the Super Eagles needs to improve in certain areas despite their 2-0 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying win against Rwanda at Amahoro Stadium on Tuesday.

Taking charge of his first game, the Malian tactician saw Nigeria take an early lead in the 11th minute when Victor Osimhen scored from the far post after a good delivery from Ademola Lookman.

Osimhen was at hand again to score the second for a 2-0 lead at the half-time break, but despite the dominant display which earned the Super Eagles their first win in Group C from five matches, Chelle admitted to have faced a difficult side and further called on his players to improve in some areas.

“It was a difficult game, Rwanda has a great team. I am proud of my players’ performance. We work a lot within the few days,” said Chelle. ”We had just two full training sessions. We keep the ball in the second half, good performance from my guys (players).

“It is my joy to set up the system, we tried two different systems in the team. We need to improve, it is the first game and we are going back to work for the second game.”

He concluded: “Every player in the team can play, we need to work together and achieve the goal of qualifying for the World Cup. We have great players, the team was good, and my job is to make the decisions, decide on the system and personality.”

The win enabled Nigeria to move fourth in Group C with six points from five matches. They have managed one win, three draws and suffered one defeat.

Meanwhile, despite the defeat, Rwanda remained second with seven points amassed from two wins, one draw and two defeats. While Nigeria will host Zimbabwe in their matchday six at Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Tuesday, Rwanda will remain at home to face Lesotho on the same day.

Likuena will head into the fixture against Amavubi having lost 2-0 against South Africa’s Bafana Bafana in matchday five.
