Zimbabwe captain Marshal Munetsi has sent a strong warning to Nigeria that they are seeking to write 'own history' when the two sides face off in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture at Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Tuesday.

While the Super Eagles won their last matchday five fixture - 2-0 - against Rwanda, the Warriors battled to a 2-2 draw against Mali. However, according to the 28-year-old, who plays for Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers, the Warriors have not given up their ambitions to qualify for the global tournament.

“I think all the guys want to do something historical, it is something that has never been done in our country," Munetsi told the media ahead of the game as quoted by CompleteSports.

“It is something that’s going to drive us, that will give us the energy to compete, we didn’t start the qualification the way we would have wanted, we lost some points away, we don’t have the same privilege Nigeria has that is not playing our home games at home but everyone should realise that we are not here for holidays we are here to make our own history.”

He concluded: “Nigeria is a much more bigger country in football but Zimbabwe qualifying for the World Cup would be more historical for us than Nigeria qualifying.”

The Warriors are currently sitting sixth with three points from five matches, while the Super Eagles, whose first win in Group C came against Amavubi, are lying fourth with six points.
