Leicester City and Ghana winger Abdul Fatawu Issahaku indicated that ex-Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor’s path to the top inspired him to strive for success.
Issahaku rose from the ranks of Ghana lower tier sides Tamale Utrecht and Steadfast before a season’s loan spell at Ghana Premier League club Dreams FC in 2021.
The 21-year-old played 11 matches for the now relegated Leicester City before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during Ghana’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Angola last year. Issahaku did not witness Adebayor’s prime but has been impressed by the snippets of the former Arsenal man’s career and his lifestyle off the field.
"Adebayor, he is one of the players who inspired me a lot and his lifestyle and how he plays and everything just kept me motivated," he told Afro Ballers.
The former Arsenal, Manchester City, Real Madrid and Crystal Palace star is one of the most revered players from Africa, and was named African Player of the Year in 2008.
Issahaku, who played a key role in Ghana’s U-20 AFCON glory in 2021 in Mauritania, is recovering from the ACL injury that has kept him out for most of the season. He is expected to return to action next season when the Foxes feature in the EFL Championship after their relegation from the top flight.
