The government of Ethiopia has handed back the final phase construction of the the 60,000 seater Adey Abeba Stadium back to a Chinese firm. Chinese State Construction Engineering Corporation (CCCC) have been handling the construction of the stadium for more than eight years now.

The stadium construction began after Ethiopia won the bid to stage the 2020 CHAN but the country failed to honor the promises given as CAF stripped the hosting right.

Lack of foreign currency pushed CCCC to halt operation as they asked the government to fix the price change. There has been a disagreement between the two parties for long period of time since 2020.

Now according to Ethiopian Reporter the the government and CCCC settled their differences and agreed to wrap up construction in our year time. Close sources claimed CCCC signed a new agreement on July 2024 but it was not disclosed to the public till January 2025.

The government got a 50 million dollar support from the United Arab Emirates for the final phase construction. In October 2024 Ethiopian prime minister Abiy Ahmed and CAF president Patrice Motsepe together visited the construction site.

Prime Minister Ahmed took the chance to affirm Ethiopia's commitment to stage the 2029 AFCON to Motsepe. The government also in the process of refurbishing the old Addis Ababa Stadium ground.
