Uganda Cranes head coach Paul Put hailed his team’s mentality and fighting spirit following their hard-fought 1-0 victory over Congo in Brazzaville on Tuesday.
Travis Mutyaba’s 55th-minute strike set up by Denis Omedi’s quick corner delivery secured the win and restored confidence after a disappointing 2-0 home loss to South Africa just days earlier.
“We played a bad game against South Africa, but I think this can happen everywhere,” Put said in his post-match press conference. “We have given answers to our fans by coming to Congo with good mentality and fighting spirit. I have been telling this to my players and they have done it. I am happy and proud.”
The result ensured Uganda finished second in Group K with 13 points, one behind South Africa, who sealed top spot with a 3-0 win over South Sudan in Johannesburg. Put acknowledged South Africa’s strength, emphasizing the need for more time to build a cohesive Cranes team.
“South Africa is a solid team because they have been together for close to five years. We are also rebuilding a team and wish to be given such time. You will see the difference,” he added.
Out of the six games played in the campaign, the Cranes didn’t lose any game on the winning, winning twice and one draw while at home they won twice and lost once. The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament will take place in Morocco.
