The 2024 AFCON U17 Zonal Qualifiers got off to a dramatic start at the Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo with action from both Group A and Group B.
Defending champions Somalia suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to a spirited South Sudan side. Shakir Antacio opened the scoring in the 38th minute and South Sudan doubled their lead just before halftime through Panom Jou in the 45th minute.
Lazarus Peter sealed the emphatic win with a well-taken goal in the 78th minute. The victory sees South Sudan top Group B with three points and in a strong position to advance. Their next challenge comes on December 18th against Sudan, who will be playing their first game in the competition. Somalia will have to regroup before facing Sudan on December 21st in what could be a must-win encounter.
Uganda held to a draw by Tanzania
In the second game of the day, hosts Uganda were held to a 1-1 draw by Tanzania in Group A. Tanzania took the lead through Saleh Ally in the 37th minute, capping off a dominant first-half display.
However, Uganda returned for the second half with renewed energy and character. Their persistence paid off when Isima Magala's deflected shot found the back of the net in the 57th minute, restoring parity for the Cubs. Both sides' defences held firm for the remainder of the match, ensuring the points were shared.
Uganda will face Kenya on December 21st in their final group game, a must-win fixture if they are to stand a chance of qualification. Meanwhile, Tanzania will face Kenya on December 18th with both matches taking place at Nakivubo Stadium.
The top two teams from the qualifiers will represent the CECAFA region at the 2025 AFCON U17 tournament.
