Tanzania head coach Agrey Moris has revealed the tactics he deployed to help his side beat South Sudan 4-0 and qualify for the TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 in Morocco.
Tanzania went into the CECAFA Zone qualifier seeking a win to book their place in the Morocco event and they took a 3-0 first-half lead courtesy of goals from Hussein Mbegu, Ng’habi Zamu and Abel Josiah Samson.
After recess the South Sudan team tried to fight back, but still failed to dominate the Tanzanian team with substitute Juma Abushiri making it 4-0 for Tanzania in the 52nd minute.
“I thank God, I thank my players and it was my first task handling the youth team and I am proud we have managed to qualify, it is history for me and I feel happy I have guided Tanzania to the 2025 AFCON,” Moris told Pan-Africa Football.
“We had watched South Sudan from their previous matches and we planned on how to stop them, we knew they are a strong team and we had to be cautious in how we approach the game, we decided to play two players with speed from the wings so that we can deny them penetration and I am happy it worked to our favour.
“Our first target was to qualify and now we have to prepare for the final, we will give the game a different approach, we know any team you face in a final will be fighting to win the trophy, we wanted to qualify first and then win the trophy and we now shift focus to the final against Uganda.”
On facing Uganda in the final, the former Taifa Stars defender said: “Uganda is not an easy team, you saw how the defeated Somalia, but we will not play like we have been doing, I will need to change a few things and try as much as possible to deny them the ball in the middle of play, they are very good at keeping the ball and it is something we will work on.”
The third and fourth play-off between South Sudan and Somalia, together with the final between Tanzania and Uganda will be played on December 27th, 2024.
