In a rare event, Egyptian football giants Al Ahly and Zamalek will meet in a friendly match for the first time in decades.

The encounter will take place in Baghdad, the capital of Iraq, as part of the celebrations marking Baghdad's selection as the Arab Tourism Capital.

Al Kass TV, the Qatari sports channel, announced that the match will be held on March 13 and will be the inaugural edition of the Baghdad Cup.

A long awaited friendly encounter

Throughout history, Al Ahly and Zamalek have faced each other 23 times in friendly matches.

Al Ahly holds the upper hand with 11 victories, while Zamalek has won 8 times, and the teams have drawn 4 times. The last friendly between the two sides dates back to August 1986, ending in a goalless draw.

Most recent meeting

Although this will be their first friendly in decades, the two teams recently met in a competitive fixture on February 22 in the Nile Egyptian League, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
