Al Ahly head coach Marcel Koller questioned the absence of VAR technology in the group stage of the CAF Champions League after a goal was controversially disallowed for his team at the end of their match against Orlando Pirates.
Al Ahly lost by 2-1 to Orlando Pirates in the final round of the CAF Champions League group stage. Despite the loss, Al Ahly finished second in Group C with 10 points, behind group leaders Orlando Pirates, who secured 14 points.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Koller said, as quoted by Al Ahly's official website:
"Today's loss is very disappointing for us, but why doesn't the Confederation of African Football (CAF) use VAR in the group stage? The CAF Champions League is the most prestigious competition on the continent."
The Swiss coach added:
"We understand that referees cannot see every situation clearly, so it's essential to provide them with the necessary support. CAF should reconsider the absence of VAR in the group stage."
Koller also pointed out the team's numerous absences and the challenges posed by long trips, such as the recent one to Côte d’Ivoire. However, he emphasized that these are not excuses and urged his players to remain focused on the upcoming stages.
Both Al Ahly and Orlando Pirates have now qualified for the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
