Al Ahly, Pyramids jet into SA for CAF Champions League clashes

Egyptian sides Pyramids FC and Al Ahly have jetted into South Africa ahead of their respective CAF Champions League semifinal, first-leg assignments on April 19, 2025.


The CAF Champions League holders Al Ahly arrived in South Africa on Wednesday with a strong squad, ready to face Mamelodi Sundowns at Versfeld Loftus Stadium in Pretoria.


“We have arrived in Johannesburg,” Pyramids tweeted on arrival while Al Ahly opted for the South African vernacular greeting, saying: “Sanibonani, South Africa.”


The Egyptians have since hit the ground running by conducting their first training sessions in South Africa.

The Egyptian Premier League leaders, Pyramids take on in-form Orlando Pirates at FNB Stadium in Johannesburg.


The Buccaneers’ last competitive game was a 1-0 win over Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup semifinal on Sunday.


Pyramids FC are coming from a 1-1 draw with Al Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League match on April 15, 2025 whereas Sundowns are smarting from a heartbreaking 2-1 Nedbank Cup semifinal defeat by Kaizer Chiefs last weekend. Pyramids saw off FAR Rabat in the quarterfinals.


Marcel Koller’s Al Ahly qualified for the CAF Champions League semifinals with a 2-0 aggregate victory over Sudan's Al-Hilal while Sundowns beat Tunisia’s Esperance 1-0 on aggregate in their quarter-final.
