Algerian football has been rocked with controversy after a referee used a mobile phone to reverse his decision during a league game between CS Constantine and NC Magra. The incident quickly became viral and made the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) react following the match, which ended in a 0-0 draw on December 21.
Constantine appeared to score a late crucial goal in the Ligue 1 matchday 14 fixture against Magra deep into second half stoppage time. Referee Lotfi Boukossa at first opted to give the goal for the home side. Nonetheless, after reviewing the action that led to the goal with a mobile phone, Boukossa decided to rule it out for an offside. Constantine players opposed the decision as the tie ended in a barren draw.

FAF reacted on Sunday as they suspended referees Boukouassa and Adel Abane. The Federation also further stated the actions taken by the referees badly damaged the image of Algerian football. The FAF asked the Arbitration Committee to further investigate the incident involving Boukossa, a FIFA listed referee who is in danger of losing his certification to officiate FIFA matches if he is punished severely.
Algerian Ligue 1 doesn't have VAR technology and now fans are calling the league to adopt new technologies to avoid such incidents.
