ASEC Mimosas coach Julien Chevalier revealed his happiness after his charges qualified for the CAF Confederation Cup quarterfinal ahead of Senegalese side ASC Jaraaf. The Ivorians inflicted a convincing 4-0 win over Opara United in the last game of the group stage.
Speaking after the match, as quoted by Sport Ivoire, Chevalier stated the qualification brought a positive mood to the club:
“We are very happy with the way things turned out. More than the score, it is the whole group that we are looking at and the final tally allows us to qualify. We knew that today we had to do the work on our side. And without being presumptuous, we thought that it was possible that things would turn out the right way on the other side. We should not have any regrets by playing inside out. We did it. So we are very happy for our qualification.”
Jaraaf lost to USM Alger 2-0 bringing ASEC level on points. Both sides wrapped up the campaign on eight points but ASEC progresses due to a better head-to-head record. ASEC lost 1-0 to Jaraaf in Dakar but won their home meeting 2-0.
Sunday's win also insured Ivory Coast to have four teams in the next editions of CAF club competitions after Nigeria's Enyimba failed to qualify for the knockout stage. ASEC Mimosas were runners-up after Algerian side USM Alger won the group.
