Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has taken a moment to honor the enduring legacy of his club teammate Denis Onyango, Uganda’s iconic shot-stopper.

“I could talk about Denis (Onyango) all day,” Williams began while talking to the media. “I first met him 16 years ago when I joined the SuperSport United first team and he welcomed me with open arms. Since then, he’s been a mentor and role model at both club and international levels.”

Onyango, a towering figure in African football has a glittering resume that includes 11 league titles and the prestigious 2016 African Player of the Year (Based in Africa) award. His influence at Sundowns, where the two now share the dressing room is something Williams deeply appreciates.

“When I joined Sundowns, he embraced me as a brother,” Williams explained. “We don’t compete—he’s always been supportive like a big brother. His leadership, humility, and willingness to help others are why he’s achieved so much.”

Williams, a trailblazer in his own right as the first African-based player nominated for the Yashin Trophy at the 2024 Ballon d’Or, acknowledged the immense standards set by Onyango. “He’s a captain, leader, father and brother to all of us,” Williams said.

“Seeing him still perform at such a high level inspires me. Hopefully some of his good traits rub off on me as I carry forward his legacy.”

Beyond the pitch, their relationship remains a close and personal bond. Reflecting on Onyango’s storied career, Williams highlighted his outstanding performances for Uganda, particularly during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations. “His dedication and success inspire me and so many others,” Williams added.

“He’s left a mark wherever he’s played, and his influence continues to resonate.”

As the most decorated player in South African football history, Onyango’s shadow looms large but Williams is determined to honor and build on the legacy of his mentor and friend.
