South African striker Lyle Foster scored his first goal in over four months for Burnley as they edged Reading FC 3-1 on Saturday.

Coach Scott Parker handed the former Orlando Pirates man a starting XI berth and he did not disappoint in this FA Cup third-round contest.

The Bafana Bafana man, struck by a serious leg injury last December, announced his full return to the scoring business when he smashed the ball home in a second attempt while meeting Joe Bauress’s perfect cross in the 71st minute.

However, the Clarets lead lasted just six minutes as Reading read the script well with Lewis Wing equalizing to drag the game into extra-time. Burnley made the most of the extra time as they progressed courtesy of two extra-time goals from Zian Flemming.

More would be expected from the 24-year-old South African who returned to action late last month after recovering from a knee injury he suffered in Bafana Bafana colours in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Foster, the most recognizable South African player in Europe, joined Burnley in 2023 on a four-and-a-half-year contract from KVC Westerlo in Belgium. His return to full fitness has boosted the Clarets' promotion push in the Sky Bet Championship as they lie second in the log table.
