Banyana Banyana head coach Desiree Ellis has explained why Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates must have women teams in the South African league.
“I’ve been saying that all along,” said Ellis as quoted by idiskitimes. “They [Chiefs] might not be doing so well on the football field but they are still the top team in the country.
“They have so many fans but their brand on their own and them having a women’s team I think sponsorship will come on board. They will bring more brands and I think the game will be elevated.
“You see what Mamelodi Sundowns has done for women’s football, TS Galaxy, and Royal AM. But I think Kaizer Chiefs coming on board, even Orlando Pirates coming on board, I think it will be so, so big for women’s football. I think it will take it to a different level.”
Meanwhile, Sundowns Ladies capped off a memorable Hollywoodbets Super League season with a 2-0 win over the University of the Western Cape (UWC) in their final game of the season at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday.
Goals from Andisiwe Mgcoyi and Lehlogonolo Mashigo secured maximum points for the Brazilians, allowing them to finish the season on a high note. Following the match, the team was presented with the Hollywoodbets Super League title in a celebratory ceremony.
Sundowns Ladies finished the season with a staggering 83 points, 14 points clear of second-placed UWC. The Tshwane giants secured an impressive 27 wins from 30 games, scored 114 goals and conceded only 12, ending the campaign with an incredible goal difference of +102.
