Betting firm BetPawa has unveiled a $222,000 (MK389 million) sponsorship for Malawi’s three regional leagues, the biggest women’s football financial injection in the Southern African nation.
BetPawa announced the one-year sponsorship in the capital, Lilongwe, on Friday, April 25, 2025, after signing an agreement with the Football Association of Malawi (FAM).
BetPawa Regional Manager for Southern and West Africa, Nii Armah Ashong-Katai, said the betting company has ventured into women’s football to contribute to its development at the professional level.
“We aim to raise the bar in women’s football. This is not just a ceremony—it’s a commitment. We want to support young girls and make this journey unforgettable. We explored various sporting disciplines, and once we learned that Malawi was making strides with its women’s football, we saw the perfect opportunity to partner with FAM,” he said as quoted by FAM media.
FAM vice-president Madalitso Kuyera, described the sponsorship as ‘more than funding—it’s a sign that the world is watching, according to the FAM website.
“We’re grateful to BetPawa for this bold and commendable step. With talents like Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga already making waves internationally, we believe this sponsorship will help nurture even more stars. We’ll ensure BetPawa gets value for their investment. In Malawi’s challenging economic climate, BetPawa’s decision to invest is a sign of passion and dedication to uplifting women’s football,” Kuyera said.
The MK389 million ($=1,750 Malawi Kwacha) sponsorship includes $51, 000 (MK90 million) for club subvention with each of the 30 participating teams getting $1,714 (K3 million), $4,971 (MK8.7 million) for end-of-season awards, and $10,000 (MK17.5 million) for league administration.
FAM explained that $156,000 (MK273.24 million) will go directly to players and technical staff as match-day rewards under the “Locker Room Bonus” initiative. The winning team of each match will receive $578 (MK1,012,000), with 23 players and three technical staff members each earning $25 (MK44,000) per game.
