Mamelodi Sundowns continued to fly high on Saturday in South Africa's Betway Premiership with a 1-0 victory over Kaizer Chiefs at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Pretoria.

A moment of brilliance from Brazilian star Lucas Ribeiro was the difference for the long reigning South African champions popularly known as "the Brazilians". Kaizer Chiefs provided stiffer resistance than in recent meetings between the clubs but a moment of true class from Ribeiro before halftime displayed the difference in star power.

Chiefs showed promise with balls played over the top to their speedy attackers but lacked the finishing quality while Sundowns were a bit more cautious than usual, prioritizing possession. Pule Mmodi came close to giving the visitors the lead in the 33rd minute but could not wrap his foot around a curled shot that went just wide.

Sundowns' strategy paid off for Miguel Cardoso's side in the 41st minute when Iqraam Rayners was played into space on the left wing. The in form forward crossed for Ribeiro in the center who cleverly flicked the ball into the air with his first touch before smashing a finish into the roof of Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma's net.

In a match of few clear cut opportunities, Ribeiro's class was the difference. Chiefs showed industry after halftime but the closest they came to leveling came early in the second half when Makabi Lilepo's cross was deflected just wide of Sundowns backup keeper Jody February's near post. Sundowns held on for the result they need, their 12th win in their last 13 Premiership matches.

Sundowns now lead second placed Orlando Pirates by eighteen points with five more matches played than the Bucs. The Brazilians return to action on Wednesday when they travel to face Golden Arrows. Chiefs, languishing in eighth place, will host relegation candidates Magesi FC on Tuesday who defeated SuperSport United 1-0 in a match played simultaneously on Saturday.
