Chippa United coach Thabo September has lauded Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali’s impact in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Cape Town City FC at Athlone Stadium in South Africa.
In a post-match interview with SuperSport Television, September said Chippa survived some nervy moments due to errors but the Super Eagles number one came to the rescue.
“It was not going to be easy. Cape Town is very difficult at home but we managed to contain them. Stanley kept us in the game when we made mistakes. Once we managed to contain them in the first half, it became a little bit easier with the wind. In the second half, we managed to control the game,” he said.
The Nigerian international has, of late, been struggling for form largely attributed to the loss of parents back home. However, September, a former SuperSport United defender, has insisted on featuring the Nigerian.
Such persistence seems to pay off with Nwabali performing like his usual self to help Chippa beat City courtesy of goals from Sinoxolo Kwayiba.
The 2023 AFCON finalist produced a telling save to deny Thabo Nodada in the 11th minute then thwarted advancing Kayden Francis three minutes later in a one-on-one situation.
Taking his turn during the interview, Cape Town City coach Muhsin Ertrugal said his side lost the game due to a lack of composure in front of goal.
The back-to-back loss saw the Citizens drop into ninth place, swapping with Chippa who moved into eighth position courtesy of a superior goal- aggregate.
