It was the turn of Kaizer Chiefs to steal the spotlight in a positive way on Wednesday as AmaKhosi earned a 2-1 home victory over Stellenbosch FC. Youth academy product Wandile Duba scored both goals for the hosts whose pleasure was doubled with the news that Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates lost 1-0 to Cape Town City in their match played simultaneously.

In a disappointing campaign so far for Chiefs, it looked like more of the same early on when sloppy passing out of the back created Khomotjo Lekoloane's opener for Stellenbosch in the 20th minute. However, the match was level within ten minutes when Nduduzi Shabalala's long throw-in was headed across the goal by Thatayaone Ditlhokwe for Duba to apply the finishing header.

Duba put the hosts up for good close to the hour mark when he latched onto a well crafted through pass from fellow academy graduate Mfundo Vilakazi and finished low past Stellies goalkeeper Sage Stephens. Chiefs, with one more match played, move past Stellenbosch into 5th place on the table.

Meanwhile in Cape Town it was a rough outing for Orlando Pirates whose five-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to an end against Cape Town City. Similar to their previous victory against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, it was a scrappy victory for interim coach Muhsin Ertegral and his side who prevailed courtesy of another match winner from Venezuelan attacker Darwin Gonzalez.

Gonzalez's winner came soon after Pirates star Patrick Maswanganyi hit the post with a penalty kick in a match filled with missed opportunities for the Bucs.

To complete the slate of three matches on Wednesday, Sekhukhune United defeated hosts AmaZulu by a 2-0 score in Durban. Congolese striker Andy Boyeli opened the scoring just before halftime with his first goal in South Africa since joining from Power Dynamos of the Zambia Super League. Linda Mntambo completed the victory late on for 4th placed Sekhukhune.
