Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi blamed the team’s latest 2-0 Betway Premiership defeat against Richards Bay at King Zwelithini Stadium on Sunday due to lack of a powerful center-forward.
Second half goals from Fekile Gcaba and Yanela Mbuthumba gave the hosts three points that could prove vital in their quest for safety come the end of the season.
However, Amakhosi will bemoan an opportunity missed, as once again, they came up short at the business end of the pitch and could deliver the killer blow in the fight to finish among the top four teams.
“Against a team defending with a low block and a lot of players inside or around the box, we tried to play combinations and deliver crosses, but we lacked height,” Nabi told reporters after the game.
“We needed a strong striker, who could contest for the ball. We must credit Richards Bay and congratulate them on their hard-fought victory. That’s football.”
On whether Chiefs are on the right track, the Tunisian coach said: “We are building a team, and a big team like Kaizer Chiefs doesn’t come together in just six or seven months. It takes time. We know exactly what we need to improve this team and this club. The results of a single game won’t change our vision.”
The defeat, which was their ninth of the campaign, left Amakhosi sitting eighth on the 16-team league table with 29 points from 22 matches.
