South Africa’s Magesi FC have something to smile about in an otherwise bittersweet season, as their coach Owen Da Gama and goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze scooped the Premier Soccer League (PSL) individual awards for March 2025.
The PSL announced on Thursday that Da Gama won the Coach of the Month award while Chipezeze earned the Player of the Month, acknowledging the impressive displays of the keeper who kept four clean sheets in four league games and five overall during the month.
Chipezeze won the accolade ahead of Orlando Pirates defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams.
“The Zimbabwean international’s acrobatic saves and composure in goal have been instrumental in his side’s recent improvement on the Betway Premiership table, with only one goal concession against Kaizer Chiefs in a narrow 1-0 defeat away from home,” the PSL statement reads.
Coach Da Gama scooped the accolade for steering Magesi FC away from the relegation zone following four wins in five games in all competitions after having taken over the reins from Clinton Larsen who quit the rookies.
Magesi FC have had an up-and-down season as they started with a bang winning the Carling KnockOut Cup after stunning Mamelodi Sundowns late last year only for the wheels to come off. However, their league form has improved substantially since Larsen jumped ship and Da Gama took over. The rookies are in 11th place, four points ahead of second-from-bottom SuperSport United on the PSL log table.
Another category of the awards saw Chippa United defender Azola Ntsabo winning the Goal of the Month award in recognition of his long-range free-kick against Polokwane City on 15 March 2025.
A panel of PSL-accredited football journalists and broadcasters from across the country decided the winners.
