Betway Premiership: Mosele scores the winner for Pirates in dream season debut

Orlando Pirates midfielder Goodman Mosele announced his return from injury in grand style on Saturday.
Orlando Pirates midfielder Goodman Mosele announced his return from injury in grand style on Saturday.

With Mamelodi Sundowns attempting to pull away from the rest of the pack once again, Orlando Pirates needed a victory against Cape Town City and the crucial match winner came from an unlikely source.

Goodman Mosele, injured after spending last season on loan at Chippa United, came on as a substitute to provide the goal Pirates needed in their 2-1 victory. The 25-year-old midfielder chested in from close range after a corner kick was headed towards him in the 87th minute to complete a dream 2024-25 season debut.

Tshegofatso Mabasa leveled the match earlier in the second half for Pirates with a poacher's finish in the 67th minute from Mohau Nkota's cross. Pirates had gone down in the first half when Cape Town City's Haashim Domingo scored against the run of play but the Bucs rallied for an important victory to stay in sight of league leaders Sundowns.

In the other early match played on Saturday, Sekhukhune United found a first half goal from Shaune Mogaila to defeat Chippa United 1-0 away from home. Mogaila unleashed a crashing strike from long distance to help Sekhukhune leap past Polokwane City into third place on the table.

Mamelodi Sundowns are in action against TS Galaxy shortly while AmaZulu and Magesi FC clash in the final match of the day.
